Conference to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Adega de Borba

Adega de Borba celebrates its 70th anniversary with a conference on the Cooperative organization and the 36th anniversary of the Demarcation of Alentejo

4 de April, 2025

Open to the public, the initiative is an invitation to reflect on new paths in wine production and cooperatives, and a unique opportunity to get to know a historic winery up close, whose heritage is intertwined with the identity and wine culture of Alentejo.

As part of the celebration of its 70th anniversary, Adega de Borba is organising a conference on 7 May, which aims to encourage reflection on the particularities of cooperative organisation in the wine sector, and the challenges that Alentejo faces in valuing its Designation of Origin as a collective brand.

The event, open to the public and with free admission, subject to prior registration, will take place in the auditorium of Adega de Borba, at number 25 Largo Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, starting at 9:30 am.

The meeting will bring together experts from the wine sector, representatives of cooperatives from various regions of the country, as well as those responsible for public entities linked to agricultural policy and regional development.

The morning will be dedicated to the theme “The challenges of cooperative organization”, with interventions on the current reality of cooperative wineries in Portugal, the organized production model and the role of cooperatives in sustainability. The panel will feature the participation of António Mendes, president of Fenadegas, Susana Gaspar, from the Planning, Policies and General Administration Office (GPP), and João Mota Barroso, President of Adega Cooperativa de Borba, among others.

The first part of the conference will close with a round table on “The paths to the future of cooperative wineries”, moderated by Isabel Martins, from Abilways Portugal, with the participation of directors of cooperative wineries from various wine regions.

During the afternoon, the conference will mark the 36th anniversary of the demarcation of Alentejo wines, highlighting the evolution of the region as a Designation of Origin and the role of institutions in enhancing the collective brand “Alentejo”. Joaquim Madeira, Maria Clara Roque do Vale, Francisco Mateus, Alexandre Vaz, Luís Sequeira and Eduardo Diniz will be speaking and will address topics such as management, territorial identity and strategies to generate more economic value and boost international recognition.

The closing of the session, scheduled for 6:00 p.m., will be led by Óscar Gato, representing Adega de Borba, and will also be attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, José M. Fernandes (awaiting confirmation).

The conference is free of charge, but limited to the capacity of the space, and prior registration is required, using this form.
