Adega de Borba dedicates a wine to “50th Anniversary of the Conquest of the First European Cup: 1961-2011

Adega de Borba has introduced a new Alentejo DOC 2007 to commemorate the “50th Anniversary of the Conquest of the First European Cup: 1961-2011.” The challenge has been launched by soccer Sport Lisboa e Benfica to mark 50 years since the conquest of the first European Cup in 1960/61.

“As a result of invitation of Sport Lisboa e Benfica for the development of a wine to celebrate an important date for the club, Adega de Borba responded with a unique and distinctive wine in a limited edition of 500 bottles of “50th Anniversary of the Conquest of the First European Cup: 1961-2011″. The anniversary edition reinforces the importance of Adega de Borba in the market,” explained Manuel Rocha, CEO of Adega de Borba.

According to Benfica Vice President Rui Gomes da Silva, “It is with great honor that the Sport Lisboa e Benfica is associated with the Adega de Borba in the presentation of a single edition of a wine of the highest quality, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the conquest of the First European Cup. As all great achievements are timeless – and in fact – wine, when great, lasts the longest without losing its qualities. And if, as Galileo would say, ‘Wine is a liquid composed of humor and light,’ what better way to celebrate would be the first title of European champion Benfica than with a toast with this wine.”

The wine has a garnet color with a good aromatic intensity of ripe red fruit, coffee, chocolate and spices. This limited edition wine presents a soft flavor, slightly astringent, with fruits and spices. The wine has a hint of wild but gentle tannins and is full bodied yet is elegant with a persistent finish.

The limited edition of 500 bottles of “50th Anniversary of the Conquest of the First European Cup: 1961-2011″ is a DOC Alentejo 2007 that was made from Trincadeira, Aragonez and Tinta Caiada grapes through a selection of old vines installed beforehand in shale soils. This wine was aged for 12 months in barrels of fresh French oak and American chestnut with a final stage in the cellar for 20 months in bottle. The alcohol content is 14%.

The wine “50th Anniversary of the Conquest of the First European Cup: 1961-2011″ will be on sale at the official store of Sport Lisboa e Benfica and the club’s official website, at www.slbenfica.pt for 50 euros.
