Limited edition: 1000 numbered bottle
Today Adega de Borba presents the brand new 2008 DOC Alentejo “Eusébio”, a wine produced to pay a special tribute to Eusébio, Sport Lisboa e Benfica’s best scorer ever. This is a limited edition, a production of only 1000 numbered bottles.
“Eusébio”, produced by Adega de Borba, celebrates a unique football player from Benfica, a man who is considered to be the greatest player of all times. Eusébio da Silva Ferreira played for Benfica’s team for 15 of the 22 years he played as a professional footballer. He was the best scorer in the team, having scored 638 goals in 614 official matches. Whilst playing for Benfica, the team won 11 Portuguese National Championships, 5 Portuguese Cups and 1 European Champions Cup. He also helped the team to achieve three more finals in the Europeans Cup and he was also the best scorer in the European Champions Cup. He won the Golden Boot twice and scored 41 goals in 64 matches playing for the Portuguese National Team.
Manuel Rocha, Adega de Borba’s CEO, states that Eusébio is more than “just” a football player; he is a unique person and a national reference. It is a great honour for Adega de Borba to team up with such an iconic person who contributed deeply for his country and his football club, a person who always took a step further in the name of Portugal. And a special person like Eusébio deserves a special wine. For those reasons, we have prepared a batch of a magnificent wine which carries the scorer’s name. This is a wine to celebrate both special moments and Eusébio da Silva Ferreira’s career.”
Benfica’s Vice-President, Rui Gomes da Silva, comments on this partnership by stating that “Eusébio is the greatest Sport Lisboa e Benfica symbol. Along with other magnificent athletes we were able to expand the name of the club throughout the whole world. Eusébio has never stopped showing his affection and dedication to this centenarian institution. Playing either for Benfica or
for the National Team Eusébio has always known to raise the national flag. And for that we wanted to make a toast to him with a wine capable of transmitting that gratitude and respect we share for this person. We have partnered with Adega de Borba, a winery which produces wines of an outstanding quality, to pay this tribute to Eusébio.”
This is Adega de Borba’s second wine dedicated to the story of Benfica. In 2011 Adega launched a red to celebrate 50 years after Benfica won the first Europeans’ Champion Cup in the 1960/61 season.
A premium wine from the 2008 vintage
The special edition “Eusébio” of 1000 numbered bottles is a 2008 DOC Alentejo produced from the Aragonez, Tinta Caiada and Trincadeira varieties, with grapes selected from the oldest vineyards cultivated in schist soils. The malolactic fermentation was performed in first use French, American and brown oak barrels. The wine then aged for 12 months in the same barrels.
This true premium nectar has a deep grenade colour and a fine aromatic intensity with notes of red fruits and jam, coffee, chocolate and spices. The flavour is soft, fresh and fruity which give the wine an excellent structure and slight astringency with hints of toast and spices, full-bodied yet soft tannins of wild fruits. The finish is long, balanced and elegant.
Limited edition
Eusébio has an alcohol content of 14.5% and is ideal to accompany veal, lamb, game or traditional pastry. This 2008 DOC Alentejo can be consumed immediately or preferably stored up to 10 years.
