On the 17th June 1665, Alentejo was the scenario for the last set of battles which granted Portugal its independence during the war of the restauration: the Battle of Montes Claros. To celebrate the 350 years of this important battle, Adega de Borba has launched a commemorative edition of Montes Claros Reserva Red 2012 with 350 numbered bottles.
The launch of this special edition is taking place tomorrow, 17th June, at Escola das Armas, in Mafra, at a military ceremony during the morning, the inauguration of a room to honour the Battle of Montes Claros and the signature of a protocol between the City Council of Borba and the City Council of Mafra.
The celebrations will continue in Borba with a military ceremony at Praça da República and the inauguration of the busts of Marquis of Marialva and Count Schomberg. The festivities will end on the 21st June with a concert from Ligeira do Exército Orchestra.
João Mota Barroso, Adega de Borba’s President, states this is a very special edition not only because in 2015 we are celebrating 350 years of the Battle of Montes Claros, but also because it’s the 70th birthday of Montes Claros brand, one of the most iconic brands from Adega de Borba, distinguished in 1945 by its unique quality and its captivating references of Colheita, Reserva, Garrafeira wines and also a white sparkling.
The commander of Escola das Armas, the Colonel of Artillary, Luís António Morgado Baptista, also states the importance of celebrating the anniversary of the Battle, which is linked to the mission of Escola das Armas. The Portuguese military forces left with a victory on their hands because they are competent and were cohesive during the battle. And this is the legacy which inspires us to train leaders who distinguish themselves for their competence and capacity to take advantage of what their best their subordinates have to offer.
Montes Claros Reserva Red 2012 has a deep grenade colour. The aroma is rich and intense with hints of jam, jelly and cocoa. Produced from the Aragonez, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira grapes, it has a soft, yet full-bodied and complex flavour with strong notes of black fruits and robust persistent tannins.
The final batch aged for 12 months in French and American oak casks and 6 months in the bottle for the final refinement, thus giving the wine more complexity, structure and richness. It is ideal to pair with meat and cheeses.
