Adega de Borba wins a gold medal with Montes Claros Garrafeira 2008

Adega de Borba won a gold medal with its red wine Montes Claros Garrafeira 2008 in the 19th edition of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, one of the most prestigious competitions in the beverages sector which was surprisingly held in the Portuguese city of Guimarães during the first week of May.

The panel of judges, who tasted 8 379 samples from all over the world, has decided to award this wine from Adega de Borba, produced by the esteemed winemaker Óscar Gato, with a gold medal. It is a red wine from the Alentejo region, produced from a pre-selection of grapes from old vines planted in schist soils which have a very strict control of the grapes by hectare and a monitorisation of the evolution and maturation of each grape variety and each specific plot.

Garrafeira 2008 was produced from the grapes Trincadeira, Aragonez and Tinta Caiada. The malolactic fermentation was performed in French and American brown oak barrels where the wine aged for twelve months. It then aged for thirty months in the bottle.

“This symbolises the recognition of quality of a great wine”, says Manuel Rocha, Adega de Borba’s CEO, who emphasis the overall tasting notes of this wine awarded with a gold medal: “a wine with great aromatic intensity, pleasant notes of red fruit and jam, coffee, chocolate and spices. It feels very velvety in the mouth with hints of fresh fruit. It has a balanced structure, slight spicy and toasted astringency, flavours that reveal soft and full-bodied tannins of wild fruits. It has a long and full-bodied finish. Balanced, elegant and persistent”.

6 500 bottles of Montes Claros Garrafeira 2008 were produced. It has 14.5% alcohol volume and goes really well with meat dishes (veal, lamb and game). It can age in the bottle for another decade.
